Arsene Wenger apologised for the defeat

The Gunners conceded eight goals for the first time since 1896 because they were destroyed at Old Trafford.

It was a result that generated extreme criticism on television Alan Hansen and Gary Neville as well as former Gunners Lee Dixon and Paul Merson, all team Wenger accused of not having even the most basic defensive cohesion.

Wenger has insisted he will not depart from what is clearly a massive job to rebuild the confidence of a club that have yet to find replacements for Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, and have collected just one point from three Premier League games so far.

Arsenal boss has pledged to try to find some new players before the transfer window closing on Wednesday night.

But for now, the best thing to do is apologize.

"The fans do not want to see their team like that," Wenger told Arsenal World.

"We can only apologize and return our strength and will in the next game.

"Great results are humiliating and hard to swallow, but I do not think they have a special meaning.

"They are always under special circumstances."

For Wenger, the special circumstances of a long list of injury, which robbed him of the services of Jack Wilshere, Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna, among others, in addition to the suspensions of Alex Song, Alex Gervinho and Frimpong.

However, others believe that as window dressing. In fact, some see the scale of the defeat of Arsenal as a positive because it will force the club's hierarchy to take a long hard look at the future direction of a club that's been six years without a trophy and seem unable to mount a championship challenge this term.

Confirmation that South Korea forward Park Chu-young will arrive in Monaco did little to ease the anger around the Emirates Stadium.

Supporters are still baffled why Arsenal did not attempt to sign Scott Parker, who is bound by Tottenham, and question the amount of money made available by the owners of the club has given the much needed purchase of Gary Cahill failed following an attempt on Friday said that about 6 million pounds, which Bolton considered an insult.

Despite the back injury - and could be a month at least before Wilshere is back in action if the assessment is accurate Fabio Capello - Arsenal desperately needed reinforcements, otherwise the campaign for the Champions League was set to win Udinese on Wednesday may be the last for a while.

Swansea's visit immediately after the international break provides the perfect opportunity for a moral victory too high, but for the moment, Captain Robin van Persie accepts his teammates have to face some pretty hard facts.

"It's an honest result if you look at the game," said the captain of Arsenal.

"It sounds crazy, but perhaps the Manchester United was much better than us and we punished hard.

"We were simply not enough. We have to deal with it.

"I do not think you can hide behind injuries or suspensions.'s Not an excuse. They had injuries too, this is foot
ball."
